ParisTech

ParisTech is a research and higher education consortium comprising 12 Grandes Écoles (leading schools of engineering and business schools) in the Greater Paris region, which develop and maximize synergies to form an acknowledged global leader among institutions of higher education and research.

There are twelve ParisTech schools (AgroParisTech, Arts et Métiers ParisTech, Chimie ParisTech, École des Ponts ParisTech, École Polytechnique, ENSAE ParisTech, ENSTA ParisTech, ESPCI ParisTech, HEC Paris, MINES ParisTech, Télécom ParisTech and Institut d’Optique Graduate School). They are located on three campuses: within the City of Paris, in Marne-la-Vallée to the east of Paris, and in Palaiseau/Saclay southwest of Paris.

History

ESPCI began its participation in the emergence of the ParisTech concept in 1991, notably through the pioneering work of the Scientific Director at the time, Jacques Lewiner. As a founding member of ParisTech (officially known as a "Research and Higher Education Consortium") since it was established in March 2007, ESPCI changed its name and logo, pursuant to a decision by the Board of Directors on February 21, 2008, and is now known as ESPCI ParisTech.

Governance links

ESPCI ParisTech is the only School in the consortium to grant ParisTech a seat, with voting rights, on its Board of Directors. (ParisTech is represented by its president, Mr. Cyrille van Effenterre, or his representative, Mr. Rémi Toussain, Director General of AgroParisTech).

Joint educational and degree programs

• In October 2009, ParisTech, ESPCI ParisTech, Chimie ParisTech, AgroParisTech, École Polytechnique and Fudan University created a joint three-year Master of Science in Chemistry to train "talents with basic knowledge and an ability to do research in chemicals and chemical engineering […] who will be high-level researchers and engineers in industry". Students will earn Masters degrees from Fudan University and from the ParisTech partner schools.
• Meeting on November 26, 2009, the Board of Directors of ESPCI ParisTech decided on a new degree name, Master of Science of ParisTech, prior to the introduction of a Master of Science in Bio-engineering under a joint degree program with Université de Paris Descartes (Paris 5), under which ESPCI ParisTech will cover the "industrial bioengineering" option (combined with the School’s own program for the Specialized Masters degree in Bioengineering).
• Many of the courses taught at ESPCI ParisTech can be accessed in the ParisTech Graduate School base.

Student life

• Since the 2009-2010 academic year, ESPCI ParisTech has issued all students enrolled for the Ingénieur degree a ParisTech student card that allows access to all the other ParisTech schools.
• The Student Union at ESPCI ParisTech is a member of Union ParisTech. All students enrolled for the Ingénieur degree participate in events like the ParisTech Tournament, the ParisTech Night, and the "Les Arts en Seine" Festival (organized by ENSTA ParisTech).

• Jean-Louis Missika, President of the Board of Directors of ESPCI ParisTech, is also on the board of MINES ParisTech, Télécom ParisTech, Chimie ParisTech and AgroParisTech.
• Georges Charpak, professor with the ESPCI ParisTech Laboratory d’Électricité générale (LEG, general electricity laboratory), winner of the 1992 Nobel Prize in Physics, was a member of the Board of Directors of École Polytechnique.
• Mathias Fink, professor and director of Langevin Institute at ESPCI ParisTech, is a member of the Board of Directors of the Institut d’Optique Graduate School.

Admissions, curriculum, and joint degree programs with other institutions

• 1st year students are admitted to ESPCI ParisTech on the basis of the competitive examination in physics and chemistry held jointly with École Polytechnique and ENS
• Students are admitted to the second year at ESPCI ParisTech in accordance with the ParisTech international admissions program
• Students are eligible for admission to the third year of the Ingénieur degree program at ESPCI ParisTech as part of double degree programs with Institut d’Optique Graduate School, and (soon to be added) with AgroParisTech
• In the fourth year, many students at ESPCI ParisTech study for a Masters or other degree in another ParisTech school: the HEC Entrepreneurs Master; the HEC Sustainable Development Specialized Master degree; the MINES ParisTech Specialized Masters in Energy Engineering and Management; the Specialized Master in Quality Management from Arts et Métiers ParisTech; the "Masternova" Specialized Master in Management of Technological Innovation in Agribusiness and Bio-industries from AgroParisTech; the Master in Life Sciences and Technologies, Nutrition and Health from AgroParisTech; and the Master in Economics and Public Policy from ENSAE ParisTech
• ESPCI ParisTech admits graduates of École Polytechnique wishing to pursue advanced degrees in bioengineering (since March 2009) and in materials sciences (since 1999).

Business start-ups

• LLTech (research begun at ESPCI ParisTech and managed by a graduate of HEC Business School)
• Fluigent (the founders are graduates of ESPCI ParisTech and École Polytechnique)
